XMPP
I provide a public XMPP server for anyone to use. The XMPP server can also communicate with users and chat rooms on other public XMPP servers with no restrictions. This includes, but is not limited to, large services such as Google Talk and LiveJournal.
Please feel free to use this XMPP service. The server's details are as follows:
- Address: foxybanana.com
- Port: 5222 (plain-text and encrypted)
- Transports (Gateways to other networks):
You can use just about any client that supports the XMPP/XMPP protocol, so you aren't required to use just one or two specific applications. I've had great experiences with Psi, Adium, Pidgin, JBother, and MCabber. Operating system requirements vary from client to client. Most clients have an option to register a new account with the XMPP server you'd like to use.
In addition to the XMPP server, I also host a list of XMPP MUCs (Multi-User Conferences). The entries on this list have been added by the community, and may help you find groups of users with interests similar to your own. MUCs are basically like chat rooms, and can support a large number of users for group conversations.
If you want to create your own conference on the foxybanana.com servers, you can do so without any prior approval.
Instructions for using the IRC Transport
The IRC transport works similarly to other XMPP multi-user conferences. The difference is in the specification of the room name (channel on IRC). Tell your XMPP client to connect to channelName%irc.networkyouwant.com for the room name, and irc.foxybanana.com for the server name. This will log you onto the IRC network of your choice, and should join the channel you've specified. Do not put the # symbol in the name, or the transport will not work.
